Black History Month promotes and celebrates Black achievements and contributions to society and aims to nurture an understanding of Black history and culture.
It takes place during February in the USA and October in the UK.
Why do we need a Black History Month?
Throughout history, people have been treated differently because of the colour of their skin. Black people have not been treated in the same way as white people and society has been unequal. One of the consequences of this is that the achievements, contributions, stories and histories of Black people have not been given the same importance.
To begin to address this, the first Black History Month in the UK took place in 1987.
Listen and learn from the many Black voices that will be highlighted this month. You can read, watch programmes and research on line to learn more. Mrs Quick has put together some recommended reading for students and staff to enjoy.
