SCIENCE

Student in science lesson

Through science, we prioritise the use of Catholic Social Teaching themes in the skills that students learn and develop as intelligent beings created in the Image of God.

Throughout KS3, themes of Dignity, Solidarity and Common Good are embedded through the understanding of human biology and the value and context of human life. Environmental Science and learning about ecosystems and pollution provides opportunity for students to think about how their actions affect the environment. Global issues and group work help students to learn cooperation and mutual support, reflecting the theme of Solidarity.

At KS4 Catholic Social Teaching themes are also embedded across all learning sequences. Topics that cover Environmental Science and Energy Resources align with the Common Good. Ecology and Climate Change align with Stewardship of Creation and an understanding of protecting the environment for future generations. Global health issues and collaborative projects provide opportunity for discussions and considerations of global health challenges and the need for global solidarity.

Our curriculum intent is to inspire and encourage all students to be inquisitive and respectful learners about the world around us, how the world works and our role within it as citizens, now and in the future. Through the scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics, students will develop their scientific knowledge, skills and understanding about science in our everyday life and will be encouraged to have the confidence to ask questions and seek answers as scientists of the future.

Throughout our curriculum, key scientific principles are introduced, revisited and consolidated allowing for progression in subject knowledge and skills to ensure students secure a thorough understanding across the Science disciplines.  Purposeful practical activities are embedded throughout the curriculum, providing exciting opportunities for students to experiment and make links in their learning by applying what they know and can do with increasing fluency and independence.
