Assessment & FEEDBACK

We are committed to providing opportunities to provide feedback and assess the progress of our students against their peers nationally.

The importance of verbal and written feedback for students cannot be overstated.

It plays a crucial role in their learning process, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement.

At Saints Peter and Paul, we are committed to providing students with meaningful feedback through a variety of methods to support their progress and achievement.

“Effective feedback has a powerful influence on learning, especially when it is specific, actionable, and focused on the work rather than the individual.”

Feedback at the heart of learning

Assessment for Learning

During units of work, students benefit from ongoing assessment for learning.

This includes activities such as:

  • recall starters

  • targeted questioning

  • and the use of mini-whiteboards to gauge understanding

Feedback is delivered immediately through verbal comments and live marking, allowing students to make real-time improvements.

In their books, this feedback is visible through:

  • margin comments

  • verbal feedback stamps

  • SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) codes

  • and words of praise that highlight their achievements

Teacher-Marked Assessments

At key points within units of work, students complete extended writing tasks or exam-style questions in response to prompts.

These are marked by teachers, ensuring that every student’s book is reviewed regularly.

Feedback includes a comment on:

  • what went well (WWW)

  • an actionable suggestion for improvement (Even Better If – EBI)

  • and identification of any SPaG issues or common misconceptions

This feedback is recorded on a yellow sheet placed in the student’s book, with students responding thoughtfully in green pen to demonstrate their understanding and next steps.

Self and Peer Assessment

During units of work, students engage in self and peer assessment activities.

These typically involve short answer or multiple-choice questions that assess key knowledge outlined in unit plans.

Students mark their own or each other’s work, identifying and correcting errors or misconceptions.

Their responses are recorded using green pen, promoting reflection and reinforcing learning through collaboration and self-awareness.
