Saints Peter and Paul Catholic High School Faith in Action Bronze Award students completed a special six week project this May, which saw secondary students and infant pupils working together to create a beautiful prayer garden and give back to their school communities.
The Widnes secondary school students teamed up with ‘Live Simply Award’ pupils at St Bede’s Infant School with the aim of nurturing relationships between Catholic children and young people of all ages within the local school network, as they worked side by side to design and create a peaceful prayer garden in the grounds of the infant school.

The Saints Peter and Paul Key Stage Three students and Mission staff visited the youngsters every Friday over six weeks to see their ideas come to life through activities including decorated cross tree ornaments and prayer flower crafts to display on the fence around the garden, whilst supporting the understanding of Catholic Social teachings.
Year 7 student Jaya Wylie said, “"It helped us learn more about the school, the children we had the pleasure of working with and developing our gardening skills. We had great fun at all times.”
Beth Smetham, also from Year 7 said, “Working with the young children allowed us to develop our communication skills, whilst also reminding us how important it is to show faith in action."
The schools marked the end of the project with a small party where all students and pupils were presented with a cross representing both schools and their joint commitment to caring for their common home and building their faith.
Heather Smith said, “Our students have built fantastic friendships with the St. Bede's infants pupils and they have loved working alongside each other over the past few weeks. It’s really become everyone's highlight of the week, and we feel very privileged to have witnessed them growing their faith together. The children have shared thoughtful conversations about what is important to us as Catholics and have written prayers together about caring for our common home.
We’re really looking forward returning with our students to support St. Bede's infants when they receive their Live Simply Award this month, and hope to work closely with them again in the next school year.”
