Our school recognises the valuable contribution that young carers make to their families. We are committed to ensuring that no student is disadvantaged because of their caring role and that every young carer receives the support, understanding and opportunities they need to thrive both academically and personally.

This Young Carers Programme aims to identify, support and empower students who have caring responsibilities at home. The programme will ensure that young carers are recognised, listened to and supported to achieve their full potential whilst maintaining positive wellbeing, attendance and educational outcomes.

The school is committed to creating an inclusive environment where young carers feel understood and able to access support without stigma.

“Do small things with great love.”

Holding Hands Together

Do you or any member of your family have a disability?

  • Does your child help to keep them safe and well?

  • Does your child do some of the adult jobs at home for your family?  If so, your child might be a Young Carer.

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.

What might a young carer do?

  • Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.

  • Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed.

  • Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed.

  • Personal care, such as helping someone dress.

  • Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions.

  • Helping to give medicine.

  • Helping someone communicate.

  • Looking after brothers and sisters.

is your child a young carer?

There is a Young Carers group that meets every week, to have a chat and work on projects using their skills to improve the school environment.  The children talk about strategies that can help to make day to day life easier for them, as well as having chance to have some time to themselves, and talk to other pupils who might feel the same.

If you think that your child might be a Young Carer, or you know someone else who might be, please contact one of our school champions Mr Junaid or Miss Crank about how the Young Carers group might be able to help.
