Saints Peter and Paul Catholic High School students have been awarded silver grading in the prestigious UK Schools’ Music Festival for the second year running.

The school’s twenty-two student strong samba band, featuring musicians from all year groups, competed against ensembles and solo performances from other schools and students around the country via video submission, and were delighted to receive their silver trophy earlier this week.

The UK Schools’ Music Festival is a competition dedicated to promoting music education and inspiring young musicians throughout the UK, and Music Festival adjudicators praised how the group “captured the essence of samba really well, showing a good technical proficiency on all of the instruments. There was a really good level of synergy between all of the players, and good communication led to everyone keeping together generally really well, which really helped make this performance exciting to watch. There was a good level of complexity that was executed well. The sound produced was also fantastic and took me straight to Carnival!”

Mrs Saunders, Head of Music, said, “Our school samba band’s popularity within our school and local community is already well known, and we have a full line up performances stretching into the summer months ahead of us. I remain immensely proud of our musicians for receiving such outstanding recognition on a national scale for two years in a row and we will definitely be celebrating this award with all our students, in the hope of inspiring others to use music as a positive outlet for learning new skills and developing confidence.”

Principal Mrs Scott said, “The Samba band is a unique source of pride for our school and I am so very pleased that they have once again been recognised for their talents. The students, tutors, and music faculty all work extremely hard throughout the year to create such strong arrangements and performances, and I would like to offer my congratulations to them all on this tremendous achievement and for being such inspirational role models and ambassadors for our school. Well done to them all and they are proof that practise really does pay off.”
